Don't Bet On It (May 2010)
Author: Major Fred Ash
Editor: John McAlister

Judge's comments:
"The introduction uses powerful and personal imagery, a scene that on the surface seems so innocent but is, in fact, anything but. I felt like I was sitting next to Major Ash as he watched this elderly lady go through her lottery ritual. From there, he built a solid, factual argument, unique from so many of the anti-gambling missives we see in other publications. Good storytelling -- real and relevant."

Second Class Scripture (August 2010)
Author: Dr. Donald Burke
Editors: John McAlister/Geoff Moulton

Judge's comments:
"This is a clear, well-explained and powerful defence of the Old Testament. Dr. Burke provides several sound reasons why the Old Testament deserves a more central place in contemporary Christian life and worship. The sidebar tips for reading the Old Testament and resources for further study are excellently inviting."

Suffering Saviour (April 2010)
Author: Major Ray Harris
Editors: John McAlister/Geoff Moulton

Judge's comments:
"The quotes attributed to Jesus containing the compelling word 'must' are presented like sledge hammer blows, pounding home the point that Jesus 'was shaped by obligation, not entitlement.' It is from there that Major Harris develops the theme that the way the church is mobilized is through overwhelming senses of responsibility."

October 2010 / November 2010 / December 2010
Editor: Ken Ramstead
Designer: Brandon Laird

Judge's comments:
"As an outreach publication of The Salvation Army, Faith & Friends is most effective. The covers have appealing and colourful images and the article titles promise exciting reading. The 'handy' size is a real plus. A well-written piece can be found in every issue. References to the periodical emphasize the abundant life concept -- the other side of The Salvation Army's reputation for serving the poor and hungry so compellingly. The publication successfully projects a fuller image of Salvation Army reality than one of drums, brass and military-style uniforms -- the one that most of us have of this illustrious denomination."

Authors: Geoff Moulton, Jayne Thurber-Smith

Judge's comments:
"Each of these pop culture take-outs on mainstream television and film offers a critical assessment through the lens of Christianity, giving the reader something they can't get from their daily newspaper or Entertainment Weekly. The writing is flawless and engaging."
