I’m saddened that there are so many children in the world like Tawanda who die young, often for lack of access to basic medical attention or the resources to pay for it

A few years ago, my wife, Rochelle, and I were living in Harare, Zimbabwe. I served as the literary secretary and Rochelle was the HIV-AIDS co-ordinator for the Zimbabwe Territory. The Rotary Club of Whitby honoured Cpt (Dr.) Paul Thistle with the Paul Harris Fellow Award for his 14 years of service to the people of rural Zimbabwe. Cpt Thistle is the chief medical officer of the Army’s Howard Hospital, which last year treated 150,000 patients with a medical staff of only three doctors and 45 nurses. On Thursday, May 21, 2009, The Salvation Army's National Recycling Operations ("NRO") partnered with Health Partners International ("HPI") to send a 40 foot container of supplies to Captain (Dr.) Paul Thistle, Chief Medical Officer, at the Howard Hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe.
