Introduction to Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Certificate – Canada and Bermuda

This certificate is composed of 8 modules that can be completed online at anytime, from anywhere for free and at your own pace.  Each module consists of teaching videos while providing access to printable teaching notes and resources.  In order to move on to the next module, a short multiple choice and true or false exam is required to test the knowledge gain by each student.  Individuals who successful complete each module will receive a Certificate of Completion.  This certificate takes approximately 6.5 hours to complete.

Please Note: This certificate is the same certificate that we have offered through live sessions in Spring and Winter 2021 and January 2022.


Certificate Description:

This certificate provides an introduction to the topic of modern slavery and human trafficking in Canada and Bermuda with an emphasis on sex trafficking, labor trafficking, forced and early marriages, child trafficking, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children.  Students will learn about:

  • Key terms and concepts associated with this issue alongside the importance of using person centered / affirming language versus person blaming / shaming language
  • The signs, risk factors, and methods of recruitment used on victims of modern slavery and human trafficking
  • The basics of sex trafficking, labor trafficking, forced and early marriages, child trafficking, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children
  • Specialized modern slavery and human trafficking topics such as the Temporary Foreign Workers Program and labor exploitation, Indigenous women and girls and domestic sex trafficking, grooming, and men and boys as individuals who experience and have experienced modern slavery and human trafficking
  • Trauma informed care (introduction level) and its importance in journeying with and supporting people who have experienced and are experiencing modern slavery and human trafficking
  • The Salvation Army’s International and Territorial Fight For Freedom Strategy, current protection and prevention programming, and ideas of how to get involved locally, divisionally, and nationally.

  

Module Description:

Module 1:
Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Overview: Part I – Explores key terminology and concepts while providing an introduction to the signs, risk factors, and methods of recruitment associated with modern slavery and human trafficking

Module 2:
Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Overview: Part II – Focuses on the difference between human trafficking versus human smuggle, where this issue is happening within the country, background information about traffickers, and what keeps victims entrapped in their situation.  Attention will also be given to the economics of modern slavery and human trafficking by discussing the concept of “supply and demand” and “supply chains”.

Module 3:
Sex Trafficking – Defines and explains what is sex trafficking while going deeper into the signs, risk factors, and methods of recruitment.  Special attention will be given to boys and men as victims / survivors and Indigenous women and domestic sex trafficking.

Module 4:
Child Trafficking – Defines and explains what is child trafficking, child labor, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children.  An emphasis will be placed on signs, risk factors, and methods that are specific to children and youth with an explanation of the grooming process.

Module 5:
Labour Trafficking – Defines and explains what is labor trafficking while going deeper into the signs and methods of recruitment.  Special attention will be given to explaining the Temporary Foreign Workers Program and how it makes migrants vulnerable to labor exploitation.

Module 6:
Forced and Early Marriages – Defines and explains the differences and similarities between forced and early marriages while providing deeper insight into its prevalence in Canada and the risk factors that increases one’s chance to become a victim to this form of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Module 7:
Introduction to Trauma Informed Care – Focuses on helping students to recognize trauma and indicators of trauma reactions in the individuals accessing programs, as well as staff providing services.  It will explore what it means to be trauma informed and how to implement trauma informed care into our programs/services while identifying effective intervention strategies that can be used when participants have a trauma response.

Module 8:
Fight For Freedom – Provides an explanation of The Salvation Army’s International and Territorial Fight For Freedom Strategy and its current modern slavery and human trafficking response programming throughout Canada.  It will also provide suggestions of ways to get involved in local, divisional, and a territorial setting will be discussed.
