I go to the 2000 year old Church that was founded in Matthew 16:18.

We (at least locally) generally move Priests around every 3-6 years. This is done to ensure that the focus is kept on Jesus and not the Priest.

In ecclesiastical communities where the Pastor is kept in one place to long, the Church becomes a cult of his/her person and personality. When the long term Pastor goes to another Church or quits completely, people go too or quit.

Our Priests are representatives of Christ. The Holy Spirit works though them. So, the person wearing the collar does not matter, as long as they are sound in mind and doctrine. I often raise an eyebrow when I hear members of the ecclesiatical communities fuss more over their Pastor and less over Jesus.

I would imagine 'moves' enable a person to gain much needed experience. After all, in the whole bureaucratic setup of it, once one church gets terrorized by a bad set of Officers, they are moved on to further spread their incompetence.

At my church the Lead Pastor has been there for 25 years. It has gone from a 30 person church to a multi-site 550 person church. And we are not slowing down. I am not sure how the Army will survive going ahead. So many of my peers have left officership because of burnout, unrealistic expectations, and lack of control over what happens to them. I'm not sure how THQ can work out the call of God on all of these people's lives. I grew up in the SA but am now serving in the Baptist denomination. I would never dream of becoming a Salvation Army officer unless drastic changes were made. God has led me to a church that fits my gifts, personality, and ideas for ministry. And nobody but God can pull me out of there to somewhere else.

Like Rob I am happy to serve the army as it currently operates, however I could see the benefit of making some changes.

I think what we all have to remember, is that it is not as cut and dry as we think it is and I don't envy the personnel office at all. There are many factors in the decision making. We tend to get upset when a move affects us and rightly so, but we also have to remember that THQ has to consider and try to do what is best for the army in Canada as a whole. Sometimes they make mistakes and sometimes the moves we dreaded most, become big blessings.

Nancy, to answer one of your points I think it is better when the officer is moved a further distance from the appointment they are being moved from because when they remain too close (especially if they liked the appointment) they can tend to not let go...which is problematic for 2 reasons 1: the new officer will have a hard time "breaking into" the appointment...and 2: if you're hung up on a former appointment then the one served currently is not getting your attention.

Having said all this, I have faith that God is still in charge of the army and if everyone affected by moves, even the hard ones, tries to see how God is working and work with it the best they can they they will see God do mighty things!

Does anyone know how much it costs to move these officers every couple of years?
How much does it cost to keep their living quarters up to standards?
If a officer is doing well with the community and people want him to stay there so they can connect with him for spiritual uplifting then why move him?
Why move them clean across the country, move them closer to the Corps they are in now so it is cheaper. Why put an officer where he has no connections with those around him, how can he do a good job when he is learning all new things at a new appointment.
Sometimes I think they put all the names in the bubble and draw a name when it comes to the next appointment on the sheet.

God bless the officers who are changing appointments.

Donald raises a valid question. I was attending a lecture by a Presbyterian minister who was being introduced and the host found it quite amazing that in 30 years of pastoral ministry, she had 4 different pastoral charges - the inference being that 4 appointments over 30 years in church ministry was a lot.

"Wouldn't they be flabergasted at how much we move around", I thought to myself. I joined The Salvation Army quite content to serve God through the Army the way it is now. No one can argue that God hasn't blessed The Salvation Army in the past, and is continuing to bless the Army of the present. But in a country where church attendance is in decline, perhaps the issue isn't whether or not we wear uniforms or whether or not we practice the sacraments, or even the type of worship music we employ in our Sunday services: perhaps the issue is largely a pastoral one.

In a rapidly changing world, people need to feel connected. That's what the church community is all about - believers coming together in Jesus' name. And maybe to counter the relentless onslaught of change that takes place in the world (change that is mostly negative), the shepherds of the church need to be in place for quite a bit longer than we're use to.

I was attending a service once in a large Pentecostal Church in my community, and the pastor informed me that his big 300+ congregation started out as a ministry of 20 people. He's been their pastor for 23 years. I guess it all depends on our missional identity. If we're called to operate as a "mission station", a place where individuals come to hear the Gospel message and have their faith developed, then I don't think it will make a difference if an officer is in an appointment for only 3-5 years. 3-5 years will be sufficient to achieve the objectives of a mission station. If we're called to larger congregational ministries however, where generations of families worship together, then longer stays might just be the answer. It all depends on how we see ourselves and more importantly, what God is calling us to be.

On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Don said:

Donald, That is the Army way. Sometimes an officer will stay even longer (there was an officer that served 16 years or so that was very rare). However there was a time when if an officer had served 2 years they were in their appointment to long. The averige stay of an officer in the beggining of the army 3-6 months.

In other denominations 4-5 years is the averige length of service aswell. The only difference is in the Army the officers are appointed, where in most other denominations the pastor has to start their applications to their new congregation now if they want to transition in the summer.

I encourae all Christians reading this list weather Army or not to pray that all transitions are done smoothly.

I do not understand the reasoning of moving Officers from a Corps after only 4 years when they are doing well, did not request a move and are fully supported by the corps family.

They were not even moved to a specialized responsibility but to another Corps. What was the urgency?

I can only hope that God will bring something good out of a move that seems to be a tragic mistake.
