It has now been more than a month since The Salvation Army received the first call to assist those who were being evacuated in High River, Alta., due to the rising flood waters.

While in some ways life has returned to “normal” for those affected by the floods, many challenges remain. Over 90 percent of the High River community of 12,500 has been directly affected by the floods. The Salvation Army's Disaster Assistance Centre has been open since July 15. The Army set up trailers and C-Can storage containers in the parking lot of the corps building while the repairs to the building, thrift store and community and family services continue.

In the past two weeks, 1,101 households have registered for assistance, which has included a food hamper, clothing items, gift card and furniture vouchers, as well as other miscellaneous items such as work gloves, diapers and cleaning supplies.  A community response unit remains on site and is serving an average of 70 hot meals per day and providing 120 people with snacks and hydration.
