When it comes to conflict, the Church is no different than any other organization. No matter how much we want to serve God in our churches and advance His Kingdom, we are all affected by conflict. Arguments over change, tradition, worship, and even trivial things such as the colour of the sanctuary carpet, can tear apart a church. How can we properly resolve conflict? There is no magical … [Read more...]

Dear Amy, So, what do you think of Nadya Suleman? She’s the mother who gave birth to octuplets. Eight babies all at once! And six more at home!! All seven years old or younger!!! (Where should I stop with the exclamation marks?) Not that I think large families are necessarily a bad thing. My father was the youngest of eight; my mother-in-law the youngest of 11. Everyone seems to have … [Read more...]

Do you have the courage to deal with conflict?

May 28, 2009 by Cadet Michelle Elsasser Leave a Comment

It was my turn to lead my fellow cadets in song during a worship class at the College for Officers’ Training (CFOT) in Winnipeg. This was my dream and my nightmare all in one. I had wanted to become a worship leader for some time, but my skills were underdeveloped. I was more anxious about this assignment than any other task at CFOT. If I sensed that my peers thought I was inadequate or … [Read more...]

Mike Robertson got the call he had waited for all his life in July 2008. “The Toronto Police Service was offering me a position,” he recounts. Mike was so stunned, he couldn’t speak. “I’d waited decades for that telephone to ring, and for the longest time, I’d despaired of it ever happening,” reflects Mike. “But God had a plan.” Insurmountable Odds Mike was the fourth of … [Read more...]

columbia

In 2005 my husband, Sheldon, and I attended a special youth weekend in Corner Brook, N.L., which led us to make a life-changing decision. This wasn’t God’s call upon our lives for officership, nor was it confirmation that we should be united in holy matrimony. It was a challenge to give of ourselves and help others. At the weekend event, a child sponsorship group had set up a table to … [Read more...]

Privilege or Pledge?

In an age of customer loyalty cards and rewards programs, have we lost the meaning of membership?

Why should we become members of The Salvation Army? What advantage is it to us?” The first time I heard these questions in a soldiership class, I was shocked. Not so much by the question as by who had asked it. You might think it was spoken by young people finding their way forward, trying to sort out values and direction in life. Not this time. It was a man in his early 80s who, with his … [Read more...]
