Leadership in the 21st century is big business. You just need to glance at the shelves of any bookstore for the current spin on leadership culture. The Army has had its own style of leadership and, as a young person in a corps and later as a younger officer, I was influenced by godly soldiers and officers that provided solid, inspirational direction. These leaders were larger than life. Their … [Read more...]

“I was called by the Lord to be a Salvation Army officer at the most unlikely time—just as I was about to enter the teaching profession,” says Lt-Colonel Jean Moulton, secretary for personnel. “In obeying the call to officership I felt that I was giving up so much, but God had much more in store for me: adventure, diversity of roles, exposure to the wider world and opportunities to learn … [Read more...]

Pat and Bill, a Christian couple from Ontario, often visited their parents and siblings in California. They prayed that somehow their faith in Christ would “rub off” on family members. Over the years Bill’s sister, Joan, had observed their Christian lifestyle and knew they were regular church attenders. She began to raise questions about personal faith and life after death. Pat and Bill were … [Read more...]

Leaders Need to be Followers First

Spiritual leadership is solely dependent upon faithful discipleship

Finding Scripture passages that focus primarily on leadership is difficult. In his celebrated book, A Church for the Twenty-First Century, Leith Anderson observes: It should surprise us that so much is said (today) about leaders and so little about followers, especially among Christians committed to the Bible. The Bible says comparatively little about leadership and a great deal about … [Read more...]

Dear Amy, Do you believe in evolution? That’s the question a reporter for one of our major newspapers put to Gary Goodyear, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, back in March. The minister replied, “I’m not going to answer that question. I am a Christian, and I don’t think anybody asking a question about my religion is appropriate.” The story immediately became front-page … [Read more...]

Peace in the Nursing Home

Gaining perspective about life through ministry to seniors

July 23, 2009 by Cadet Michelle Elsasser 3 Comments

As I enter a resident’s room at the nursing home, I am quickly swept up by the atmosphere. I do a rapid scan over the dressers and a brief glance at the walls. I like to get an idea of what the person's life was like prior to coming to the residence. Some of them have photos, some have precious knickknacks and others have personal adornments and crafts. To various degrees, each room is uniquely … [Read more...]

For students throughout Manitoba and the world, an advanced degree can lead to greater job security, a higher paycheque, and greater professional freedom within the economically challenged job market. That’s why a recent policy change at the University of Manitoba is welcome news for students like Megan Bartel, a student at faith-based Booth College. Voices From God

How can we know that God is speaking to us? In what ways does he do this?

Does God speak to people? For millennia, people have searched for a direct line to a higher power. In ancient societies, they believed that the gods revealed their secrets through signs. Natural events such as earthquakes or eclipses were interpreted as messages from the divine world. Lack of rain was seen as a punishment from the gods, a healthy crop the sign of favour. Today, we would dismiss … [Read more...]

Impacting Youth in Your Community for Christ

Are we just doing what we’ve always done because it’s safe and it used to work well?

A few months ago, a girl named Patty impacted my life in an incredible way. Our corps, Vancouver 614, has been involved in her community and school for over two years now, and she was one of the charter members of our after-school activities. The area she lives in is extremely poor, riddled with crime and a host of other social problems. My corps team has spent time with this little girl and her … [Read more...]
