Governor General David Johnston helped volunteers serve lunch at Pembroke Community Church, Ont., on Tuesday, April 23, as part of a tour to mark National Volunteer Week. His Excellency spoke to Salvation Army staff about the program and conversed with friends and volunteers during the meal.

“National Volunteer Week gives Canadians the opportunity to think about how we can make a difference in our communities by getting involved,” said His Excellency. “Those who give of their time, talent and resources create a better country because they believe that it can and should be done. Their actions inspire us to do more and to be more caring, since each of us has something to give. They deserve not just our thanks, but also our recognition.”

The Salvation Army Pembroke soup kitchen is open four days a week and serves over 6,000 people a year.
