    3. “Turn with Me to Song Number One!”

    Retrospective 62(c) February 15, 2018 Randy C. Hicks
    Clouds and darkness veiled the skies When the Lord was crucified; “It is finished!” was His cry,
    Clouds and darkness veiled the skies When the Lord was crucified; “It is finished!” was His cry,

    Does anyone recall when the first song in a Salvation Army Song Book was one that came from the pen of Sarah J. Graham - a member of the Salvation Army in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.

    A brief note concerning her simply states: her fiancé reportedly died of tuberculosis, and she never recovered from that trauma.

    The first line of that song was “On the cross of Calvary, Jesus died for you and me;” Another book compiled and published by Rev. William Booth, General - its title was THE SALVATION ARMY - SONGS!

    Above this song at the top of the page you will find the following:

    Part 1 – SALVATION
    CALVARY

    1.
    On the cross of Calvary,
    Jesus died for you and me;
    There He shed His precious blood,
    That from sin we might be free.
    Oh, the cleansing stream does flow,
    And it washes white as snow!
    It was for me that Jesus died
    On the cross of Calvary.

    O Calvary, O Calvary!
    It was for me that Jesus died
    On the cross of Calvary.

    Oh, what wondrous, wondrous love,
    Brought me down at Jesus’ feet!
    Oh, such wondrous, dying love,
    Asks a sacrifice complete!
    Here I give myself to Thee,
    Soul and body, Thine to be,
    It was for me Thy blood was shed
    On the cross of Calvary.

    Take me, Jesus, I am Thine,
    Wholly Thine, for evermore;
    Blessed Jesus, Thou art mine;
    Dwell within for evermore;
    Cleanse, oh, cleanse my heart from sin,
    Make and keep me pure within!
    It was for this Thy blood was shed
    On the cross of Calvary.

    Clouds and darkness veiled the skies
    When the Lord was crucified;
    “It is finished!” was His cry,
    When He bowed His head and died.
    All the world may now go free;
    It was for this that Jesus died
    On the cross of Calvary.
