Probationary Lieutenant - 1910 to 1940's

The Probationary Lieutenant is the brightest rank in the entire Salvation Army ranking system, not including Full Lieutenant.

The trim of the Probationary Lieutenant consists of one thin yellow braid on the outer edge of a black braid which encircles a black epaulet.

The high collar would consist of a red patch with a yellow “S”. The sleeve trimming would have one row of yellow braid around the cuff.

A Probationary Lieutenant was still in training.

The minimum requirements for the promotion of Field Officers to a higher rank are as follows:

“One year’s service as Probationer and the completion of Lessons, before promotion from Probationary Lieutenant to (full) Lieutenant.”1
