1. “Turn with Me to Song Number One!”
Retrospective #62(a) February 13, 2018 Randy C. HicksDoes anyone recall when the first song in a Salvation Army Song Book was one that came from the pen of George Scott Railton?
The first line of that song was:
“Can you tell me what army is going to win?”
It was compiled and published in 1882 by General William Booth - its title was THE SALVATION SOLDIER’S SONG BOOK!
Above this song at the top of the page you will find the following:
SALVATION SONGS
Section 1 – CALLS TO SURRENDER
Showing that all are sinners in danger of hell,
and will all go there unless they repent and believe on Christ.*************************************************************************
1.
Can you tell you what army is going to win?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Why, the Salvation Army.
Hallelujah! Can you tell me what is its Commander’s name?
Oh, glory Hallelujah!
Why, the Lord is its Commander.
Hallelujah!Do you think He is able to lead His men?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Well, He always leads to victory.
Hallelujah! Can you tell me what keeps all the men in its lines?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Why, it’s loving one another.
Hallelujah! Can you tell me what weapons its soldiers use?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Well they’ve none that harm a sinner.
Hallelujah! Can you tell me the bounty the soldiers get?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Why, the love of God’s their bounty.
Hallelujah!Let the enemy be many, or the enemy be few,
Oh, glory hallelujah!
It’s a pleasant march to glory.
Hallelujah!Do you think they would let me enlist right away?
Oh, glory hallelujah!
Why, you’re just the one we’re wanting.
Hallelujah!Only lay down your sins at the Saviour’s feet,
Oh, glory hallelujah!
And He’ll soon make you a soldier.
Hallelujah!*************************************************************************
Alas, I am unable to supply a melody – however, if you search for this on the internet you may indeed find one? (Of course you can always write your own! Good luck with the metre!)There’s more to follow – stay “tuned!”
