COLONEL GLEN SHEPHERD
Glen Shepherd was born in 1948 into a family where Christian service was the focus of family life. It was in London that he made his first commitment as a Christian. In 1963 he moved with his family to Montreal and became a member of the Montreal Citadel corps.
He was educated at McGill University in Montreal, graduating with a B.A. (Honors) in Economics and Sociology and an M.A. in Economics. He subsequently pursued theology studies at Wycliffe College, an Anglican seminary in Toronto.
Eleanor and Glen Shepherd met in Montreal during their student days and were married there in 1969.
Upon graduation from university Glen worked for Canadian Pacific at its head office in Montreal and then in Winnipeg. He subsequently accepted a position as executive assistant to the President of Manitoba Telephone System. In Winnipeg he was active as Songster Leader and Sunday School teacher at Winnipeg Citadel.
In 1979, certain of God’s will for their lives, the Shepherds entered The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training in Toronto and were ordained and commissioned as the corps officers for Lethbridge, Alberta in 1981.
Subsequent service as an officer has seen Glen serve as Divisional Youth Secretary in Quebec before moving to Paris, France in 1987 where he served as National Youth Secretary for four years. In 1991 the Shepherds returned to Canada where Glen served as Assistant Financial Secretary and Financial Secretary at Territorial Headquarters and, in 1998 as Divisional Commander in Quebec. In 1999 he was appointed as Territorial Commander for the France territory with headquarters in Paris.
The Shepherds returned to Canada in 2003 and Glen was appointed as Chief Secretary for the Canada and Bermuda territory. In this position he is, in effect, the chief operating officer for the work of The Salvation Army in this territory.
In February 2003 the government of France awarded Glen the Legion d’Honneur, the highest award that can be bestowed by the French Republic. The citation noted his leadership of The Salvation Army during his time in France the important place of The Salvation Army in French life.
Glen’s interests include music and reading (politics, sociology, business, history and church life). He is also an avid follower of the Montreal Canadiens. As a firm believer in the centrality of the local congregation in the life of the church, he has always sought to remain actively engaged in the ministry of the local Salvation Army corps where he is a member.
