1st Year Cadet - 1887 to 1979

It is not certain when this rank began in the Salvation Army, but when the first Training Homes opened in Yorkville in 1887, Cadets received a more formal and in-depth training for Officership. A Cadet is not an Officer, but an Officer-in-training.

Cadets received only one year of training until 1960.

The trim for the one year only was one thin red braid which encircled the high collar with navy blue “S’s” on each side of the collar.

When low collar uniforms became standard, the thin red braid went vertically in the middle if a black epaulet which is encircled by a black braid. The navy blue “S’s” went on each lapel of the tunic.

This model of trim became obsolete in June of 1979. The Proclaimers of Salvation session was the last session to wear this model of Cadets’ trim.
