Lieutenant - 1879 to 1940's

Upon completion of Probationary Lieutenant lessons and required service, the Probationary Lieutenant was promoted to Full Lieutenant; referred to as just Lieutenant.

The trim of the (full) Lieutenant consists of one thin yellow braid on each edge of a black braid which encircles a black epaulet.

The high collar would consist of a red patch with a yellow “S”. The sleeve trimming would have two rows of yellow braid around the cuff.

An officer must complete “One year’s service as (full) Lieutenant (two years’ service in all) before promotion to Captain. Or, if still serving as Second-in-command at a Corps, or in a corresponding position elsewhere, three years in all.”1

See the current active Lieutenant description for details on our active Lieutenant rank.
