Who can participate in Leadership Development programs?
Leadership Development programs are open to officers, employees, and ministry leaders across The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory. Specific eligibility criteria for different programs are listed on each program page.
How do I know which program is right for me?
Every leader brings unique experiences, styles, and responsibilities. Our Leadership Formation programs are designed to support leaders at different stages of their development:
- Leadership Development Orientation - Learn what's available and how to begin your leadership development journey.
- LEADS Basics Leadership Certification - Explore the foundation of leadership through the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework.
- Foundational Leadership Certification - Strengthen your core leadership capabilities self-directed learning and practical, mission-based development.
- Advanced Leadership Certification - Deepen your leadership capabilities through advanced learning focused on strategic leadership, change management, and decision-making.
Is there a cost to participate in these programs?
Leadership Development covers the cost of program materials, travel, and other expenses. There is no cost to you or your ministry unit.
Can I take more than one program at a time?
Yes. Participants may enroll in more than one program at a time. While the LEADS Basics Leadership Certification can be completed alongside other Leadership Formation programs, we recommend focusing on one major program at a time so you can fully engage with the experience and apply your learning effectively.
Do I need approval from my supervisor to enroll?
Yes, you need your supervisor's approval to apply to any Leadership Development program. This helps ensure your participation aligns with your ministry unit's goals and capacity.
What if I start a program and need to pause or withdraw?
Our programs are designed for busy leaders who are actively serving in ministry. If you need to pause or withdraw from a program, please contact the Leadership Development team. We will work with you to review your options and determine the best path forward based on your individual circumstances.
Access and Inclusion
Are the programs accessible for people with different learning needs?
Yes. We're committed to creating a learning environment that supports all participants. If you have specific learning or accessibility needs, please let us know. We'll do our best to work with you and provide reasonable support to help you engage fully in the program.
Are any programs available in French?
Yes. Select Leadership Development programs are available in French, and we're continuing to expand these offerings. Harvard ManageMentor content used in our certification programs is fully available in French, and translation of additional resources is underway. If language is a barrier to your participation, please contact us to explore available options.

What is the Foundational Leadership Certification, and how do I get started?
The Foundational Leadership Certification (FLC) is a self-paced program designed to strengthen core leadership capabilities. Through online learning and Leadership Cafés, participants develop practical skills in areas such as communication, feedback, coaching, and decision-making.
To get started, you'll need your supervisor's approval to participate. What are the requirements for the Advanced Leadership Certification (ALC)?
The Advanced Leadership Certification (ALC) is a self-directed program designed for experienced leaders who want to expand their leadership impact. Through advanced learning opportunities, participants strengthen their capabilities in strategic leadership, change management, and decision-making.

How does the Emerging Leaders Program work and how do I apply?
The Emerging Leaders Program is an in-depth leadership development experience designed to help leaders expand their impact and effectiveness. Grounded in the LEADS framework, the program combines facilitated learning, coaching, peer learning, and applied projects to support leadership growth and development.
To apply, you must be a current people leader and receive your supervisor's approval.

Do I need to complete assignments or projects as part of these programs?
Yes. All of our programs include opportunities to apply what you're learning to your real-world leadership context. In the Foundational and Advanced Leadership Certifications, this may include On-the-Job Action Plans. In more advanced programs, projects may increase in scope and complexity-but they are always grounded in your current leadership responsibilities. Leadership Development will equip you with the tools, concepts, and support to help you confidently put your learning into action.

Program length and delivery vary by program. Some programs are primarily self-directed, while others include facilitated learning, peer collaboration, coaching, and applied learning activities.
