Leadership and Learning Opportunities for Officers

Leadership in The Salvation Army is a lifelong journey of growth. Officers have access to opportunities ranging from formal programs and workshops to broader educational experiences. Some are open for registration, while others are by invitation only—but all are designed to help you lead with wisdom, integrity and a heart for service, while strengthening your impact in your community and beyond.

Foundational Leadership Certification (FLC) for Officers

Completing FLC is a key milestone in the 8-Year Plan. Officers, envoys, and lay leaders who have not yet completed the program should connect with their Area Commander to determine the best time to take this next step in their leadership journey.

Officer candidates, officer cadets and commissioned officers are called to lead with wisdom, integrity and a heart for service. FLC equips you with practical leadership skills, strategic insights and a deeper understanding of how to bring The Salvation Army’s mission to life. Designed to be self-paced and online, this program brings together leaders in similar roles to learn individually and then engage in collaborative discussions that reinforce key leadership principles.

By joining FLC, you’ll grow alongside peers, applying leadership concepts to real-world ministry challenges while strengthening your impact in your local community.

Educational Tours for Active Officers

It is The Salvation Army's policy that following the completion of 12 years of service, officers will be offered the opportunity to participate in educational tours. Educational tours will normally be offered every two years.

The purposes of educational tours are:

  • Provide Education
  • Honour service given
  • Develop an awareness of the roots of our faith
  • Enrich the officer's personal spiritual life
  • Enhance ministry

Officers interested in participating in an educational tour are required to submit an application (FRM Application Educational Tour) to the officer personnel department approximately 18 months before the tour start date.

Officers must have the endorsement of their divisional commander/department head or Cabinet representative as part of the application process.

Note: All officers are required to personally pay a portion of tour costs. The personal cost is set each year.

Interested officers must discuss with their Divisional Commander. More information is available through the Officer Personnel Department and in policy HR 09.040.
