I grew up learning music through the church and through various relationships I made at church. I worked my way up from the beginner band to junior band, and then eventually to senior band which I’m part of now on Flugel Horn. I still help the second cornets in our junior band. I love being part of every band concert, weekend, carolling gigs, or outreach events as part of the band. Christmas carolling is one of my favourite times of the year. I love singing, whether in the choir at church, worship team, or to any songs in my car. I’m a big fan of Broadway music. I have a strong passion for worship music, and I enjoy playing and occasionally leading as part of our worship team. I’ve always had a passion for learning new instruments, trying out anything from brass instruments like tenor horn to instruments like the keytar. My favourite instrument, and the first instrument I learned to play, is the piano. You will often find me at the piano by myself, playing some Debussy. Overall, music is a part of me, and I believe it is important and beneficial to so many aspects of life for everyone.

Energy

Before I wrote Energy, I had only written one song before with my two cousins at music camp. I had always wanted and tried to write more but I was never really successful. Recently, I have been struggling with some health issues. Because of that, finding the strength to do everything I wanted to do was hard. During the summer, I was working at Pine Lake Camp (our divisional camp in the Prairies and Northern Territories) as a head cabin leader and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to bring my usual amount of energy to the camp and the kids. Whenever it came down to it, somehow, I found the energy needed to get involved with the kids to hopefully make their experience a memorable one. I don’t know how I received that energy or where it came from, but it gave me the idea to write a song. I had seen a video at my church from the BibleProject that spoke on the Hebrew word “ruakh” and its connections to the Holy Spirit. This word describes the energy that can make clouds move and trees sway. In the way that wind is powerful, so is God and it’s His energy through the Holy Spirit that sustains us. I have never heard of the Holy Spirit being described this way – as an energy or a force just like the wind. That’s what gave me the idea for the bridge of the song, and the rest of the song came later. I also had help along the way from Laura Rowsell who worked with me through the writing process, and Simon Gough who gave me songwriting lessons at different music camps. Once I had most of the song formed, I looked for any verses in the Bible that talked about energy. I only found one. Many used words that were energy-adjacent such as strength or power, but only one verse in one specific translation used the exact word. That really proved to me how God-breathed this song was for me. He gave me the words I needed to hear to showcase His power and His presence in my life is the reason I have been able to keep going. It highlighted for me that God is still moving and using people today. He used my specific situation to create something that hopefully blesses and touches others who hear it. Colossians 1:29 (NIV) says, “To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.”
