    "GOING BACK … TO WHAT?"

SEPTEMBER Reflection September 16, 2020 by Major Beverly Ivany

Usually when September rolls around we think about going back to school—or work. Going back to what always has been, usually with a brand new twist: a new grade; possibly a new school, college or university; in some cases a new position at the workplace; a new ministry opportunity. And with each of these new ‘twists’ there is a certain excitement in the air. New friends. New challenges. New environments. There’s a sense of freshness. A clean slate—on which to draw or write some amazing things—which will bring much joy for the days that lay ahead.

But it’s so different this year. We’re going back … to what, exactly? Kids— fearing what school will be like, as they wear their masks and stand six feet away from their friends. Those in their late teens and early twenties told, for the most part, to stay home—having to work online for their studies. And many adults also forced to work from home—with meeting after meeting on zoom or other similar platforms—while also looking out for their aging parents and young kids, as well as striving to keep themselves safe and well.

It’s a crazy world out there! And what is there to look forward to down the road? With no travel, no special getaways, no exciting adventures in sight – at least for the near future. What can we expect; and when will all of this nightmare end? Then, if it does, what will life look like at that point in time?

Although COVID-19 has brought with it so many disappointments and heart-aches—with people losing their jobs, so many becoming sick, all the stress and anxiety— some good has come out of this pandemic. Family, for the most part, having connected more—and on a deeper level. Many have been out walking and enjoying God’s Creation—enjoying friendly chats with neighbours. And, of great significance, we all have had more time to spend with the Lord—reading His Word, praying for ourselves and others, reaching out to those far less fortunate than ourselves. We are appreciating the significant value of one another, wanting to support in any way possible.

Instead of ‘going back’ to something this fall season — and being greatly disappointed that things are so different -- let’s ‘look forward’ to what possibilities lie before us. More time with family; more time to reach out to others; more opportunities to meet with our neighbours; and best of all, more quality time to spend with Jesus.

Yes: Going forward …to better and greater things! And let’s never forget this important truth: The Lord is with us through all we’re presently experiencing. We must trust Him for all that lies ahead, believing He is in control and wants only the very best for His beloved children!
