Captain - 1878 to 1930's

Upon completion of Probationary Captain’s lessons and required service, the Probationary Captain was promoted to Full Captain; referred to as just Captain.

The trim of the Probationary Captain consists of two thin red braid on each edge of a black braid which encircles a black epaulet. The high collar would consist of a red patch with a red “S” with gold trim. The sleeve trimming would have two rows of red braid around the cuff.

Duration of service until promotion depended upon when the officer was commissioned. When the rank of Ensign was still active, “…at least 5 years’ as Captain” 1 was required before promotion to the rank of Ensign.

When the rank of Ensign was discontinued, “Ten years’ service in all after Cadetship before promotion from Captain to Adjutant. Or if still serving as Second-in-Command at a Corps, or in a corresponding position elsewhere, twelve years in all” 2

See the current active Captain description for details on our active Captain rank.
