Staff Capatin - 1881 to 1947

The Staff captain is the first of “Staff” rank in the Salvation Army.

“The distinction between Staff and Field Officers is (was) necessary for purposes of command and administration only, and is not due to any desire to create a privileged class in The Army, which could only result in weakening of the spirit of unity.”1

The staff Captain trim looks very much like the Commandant trim except for colour.

An Officer appointed to the Staff is proposed for such promotion by his (/her) Territorial Commander (or similarly responsible leader) and approved by International Headquarters.”2

The trim constant of a royal blue epaulet with a black braid encircling it. The high collar is a royal blue patch with a white “S” and one star on each side of it. The sleeve trimming is a row of royal blue cloth piping inserted between two black braids encircling the sleeve.

“An Officer promoted or appointed to the Staff is required to sign the Staff Bond, after which a Staff Officer’s Commission will be issued to him (/her) bearing the signature of the General.”3
