COMMISSIONERS NORMAN and MARION HOWE
Commissioner Norman Howe comes to the Canada and Bermuda Territory following four years of leadership as chief secretary and then territorial commander for the Australia Southern Territory.
He was educated in England at the King Edward VI Grammar School, Stafford, and subsequently served in the Royal Artillery before completing officer training in 1957.
Following ordination and commissioning, he worked for seven years in the East End of London. These early experiences have left a lasting concern for the forgotten people of the world.
Evangelical and community work in the provincial centres in the United Kingdom reinforced the conviction that a vibrant worshipping congregation with a commitment to social care can most effectively fulfil Christ's Commission to make Christian disciples, and also recruit soldiers for God's Army.
Education and training work have featured strongly over the years. The commissioner led the Army's youth work in the United Kingdom and was subsequently appointed by General Eva Burrows as principal of the International Training College.
Experience as a DC gave opportunity to encourage initiatives in creative worship and church growth. In his most recent appointments, he has developed a vision and strategy which seeks to rediscover the intent and passion of the Army's founders.
Commissioner Marian Howe was ordained and commissioned in 1953 and since her marriage in 1959 has shared these experiences in partnership ministry. She trained as a teacher, specializing in speech and drama, and has developed considerable pastoral skills. She has a particular concern for the development of spirituality both within the Movement and in the community as a whole.
As territorial president for the Army's women's organizations, she challenges those factors in contemporary life which threaten the stability of family life.
The new territorial leaders bring additional international experience to their present task having led training projects in Europe, India and the United States of America. Their leadership has been marked by a strong emphasis on biblical teaching. They have a personal mission statement that commits them to develop spiritual leaders for an Army with a spiritual mission.
