A moment is ‘a very brief period of time.’  It was only for a moment that my finger lay wedged between the car door and the frame of the car. Don’t ask me how I did it, except that it was not our vehicle, and somehow, I managed to shut the door on my own finger! The pinky finger, on my left hand, is a little bit swollen this morning.

So much can happen in a moment.  A moment in time is significant. When we lived in British Columbia, on Vancouver Island, we often experienced day after day of gray skies and rain in the winter. And then, that sunshine would break through – for a moment.  For me, it was as if the world became lighter and brighter ‘in that moment.’

Life changing moments of great significance occur in the Bible, when Jesus is present.  Saul was blinded, in a moment, by the Lord, told that his persecution of Christians was wrong. Days later, in a moment, his sight was returned, and he became a life bringing follower of Jesus (Acts 22:13).  Simon was given a new name, by Jesus, in a moment.  Simon became Peter, meaning ‘Rock’. This affirmed his identity (Matthew 16:18). Jesus healed a boy, from a demon, in a moment, granting honour and freedom to a family (Matthew 17:18).  These are but a few instances.

Many years ago, a friend in Christ showed up on my doorstep during a very difficult season.  She had no idea what had occurred the day before in my life.  She had written a letter to me. It was a powerful moment that I will never forget.  It breathed life and light into my soul on that dark day.  We are reminded in Corinthians that for all who believe in Jesus, “Jesus Christ is in you” (2 Corinthians 12:5). This allows us to be sharers of Jesus wherever we go.  We carry his life.  On that day, my friend was Jesus to me. She became his voice, and hands, and feet, carrying his message of great love and continual presence.

We can offer life changing moments to others. This is significant because I heard a statistic this morning.  It said that loneliness can cause premature death, at a rate of 29%.  What could a moment of our time, ‘Christ in us the hope of glory’ (Colossians 1:27), offer to someone else?  If Jesus, the living one, is present when we are present, what can we offer to someone that might make their world brighter and load lighter today.  These are difficult days; emotionally for some, financially for others.

The reason my friend stopped by my door, on that day, was because daily she would listen to the LORD asking how she could live for him on that day.  She sought to carry the life of Jesus into her day. Where does Jesus want us to carry his life today? This older hymn has a new refrain offered to it.  The chorus says, “I am yours set apart for you…take my life you are all I live for.”  Much can happen through our lives, during a moment in time.  May we offer these words as our prayer today.

623: Take My Life And Let It Be (refrain by Michael Neale)

Take my life and let it be
    Consecrated Lord to Thee
Take my moments and my days
Let them flow in ceaseless praise
Let them flow in ceaseless praise

Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love
Take my feet and let them be
    Swift and beautiful for Thee
    Swift and beautiful for Thee

I am Yours set apart for You
I am Yours hungry for Your truth
Take my life You are all I live for
    I am Yours

Take my voice and let me sing
    Always only for my King
Take my lips and let them be
    Filled with messages from Thee
    Filled with messages from Thee

I am Yours set apart for You
I am Yours hungry for Your truth
Take my life You are all I live for
    I am Yours

Take my will and make it Thine
It shall be no longer mine
Take my heart it is Thine own
It shall be Thy royal throne
It shall be Thy royal throne

I am Yours set apart for You
I am Yours hungry for Your truth
Take my life You are all I live for
Take my life You are all I live for
Take my life You are all I live for
    I am Yours

    AMEN
