    Good Morning Family Of God

Letter 46 November 26, 2020 by Majors Brenda & David Allen

Locked down but not locked up. This week Toronto, and much of the area around it, has gone into lockdown.  This seems to be a common, repetitive occurrence, in various countries around the world. To be in lockdown is ‘to experience a measure of isolation or restricted movement’. To be locked up is ‘to be imprisoned’.  Covid19 has locked us down but we are not locked up!

Today I am thinking about the good news of Jesus.  It cannot be locked down or locked up.

Charles W. Colson, who is known for the Watergate affair, sabotaging President Richard Nixon, masterminding some of the dirty tricks that led to the president’s downfall, emerged from prison to become an important evangelical leader. He was locked up, but the gospel behind locked doors was moving with freedom and power.  Better known as Chuck Colson, he tells a personal story of being ‘born again’ through faith in Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God indwelling him, he became a powerful voice, proclaiming the gospel with earnestness until his death at age 80.

Locked up, Paul the apostle wrote the book of Colossians.  The Spirit of God was not locked down! In his imprisonment he wrote to a young church that needed encouragement and direction. “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel  that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace (Colossians 1:3-6).  I invite you to read that scripture portion again.  There is so much goodness in it!

The good news of Jesus is never locked down and cannot be locked up.  It is “bearing fruit and growing throughout the world.” Nothing, in all the world, can hinder the movement of God’s Spirit. This is true in this pandemic, even when we may feel weak or discouraged by the way things are in our world and our personal lives.  There is a ‘hope stored up’ in us. Through this, in simple and profound ways, the good news moves.  Gospel movement is not dependent on our physical or emotional strength, nor our intellect and skills. “Not by might, nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord” (Zechariah 4:6).

315: All Over The World The Spirit Is Moving

All over the world the Spirit is moving
All over the world as the prophets said it would be
All over the world there's a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

All over the church the spirit is moving
All over the church as the prophets said it would be
All over the church there's a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

All over us all the spirit is moving
All over us all as the prophets said it would be
All over us all there's a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

Deep down in my heart the spirit is moving
Deep down in my heart as the prophets said it would be
Deep down in my heart there's a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

Mighty moving God, your gospel is moving around this word.  In some places it is like a wave and in others it is a trickle. We are amazed that even in areas of our world where belief in Jesus comes at a cost, your gospel grows. Together, with fervency, we pray for those who experience heightened persecution on account of belief in you. Move Holy Spirit and grant continued courage. Today, remind us that our prayers are never locked down, and are used by your spirit every day. AMEN
