MAJOR ARTHUR YOUNG

Born in 1861.

He entered the Training Garrison on February 2, 1886. His first appointment was to the Brooklyn II Corps with the rank of Cadet.

On October 17, 1884 he was appointed to the Toronto Headquarters as editor of the War Cry. On April 14, 1885 he was transferred to the Kingston Headquarters with the rank of Staff-Captain. His next appointment was to St. John to open the New Brunswick Division and establish a number of Corps. Within a year, however, he moved to take charge of the Nova Scotia – PEI Division.

In January of 1886 Staff Captain Young, assisted by four Officer-Lasses, officially opened the work in Newfoundland, building on the embryo Army established by Emma and Charles Dawson while on their honeymoon.

On December 7, 1886 he was appointed to open the work in Northwestern Canada, with headquarters in Winnipeg; and in 1888 he was promoted to Major.

On February 10, 1990 he was appointed Chief Secretary for Canada. In August 1890, Major Young was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Married Staff Captain Annie Totten on February 10, 1890. She had been an able English officer who helped pioneer the Army’s work in Newfoundland.
