COLONEL JOHN BUSBY
Born in East Orange, New Jersey to officer parents, Colonel John Busby was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. where his father, Lieut.-Colonel John W. Busby, served as Trade Secretary for twenty-five years. Colonel Busby's grandfather, Commissioner W. C. Arnold, was Territorial Commander of the U.S.A. Southern Territory from 1939 to 1948. His grandparents originally served in the Canada and Bermuda Territory for a period of 20 years with his mother being born in Toronto during that time.
Colonel Busby met and married Elsie Henderson while attending Asbury College from which he received his B.A. in 1960. He continued with postgraduate work at Asbury Theological Seminary and Emory University Candler School of Theology following which he entered the School for Officers' Training and was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in 1963.
Following several corps appointments, the Busby’s served on the staff of the School for Officers Training and in Divisional work prior to the Colonel's appointment as Territorial Youth and Candidates Secretary, U.S.A. Southern Territory in 1984.
In 1986 the Busby’s became divisional leaders for the Arkansas/Oklahoma Division where they served for 3 years before being transferred to the Florida Division, Colonel John Busby as Divisional Commander and Colonel Elsie Busby, Divisional Director of Women's Organizations.
Colonel John Busby was appointed Chief Secretary for The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory as of December 1, 1993. In addition to serving on the Territorial Cabinet, Governing Council, Catherine Booth Bible College Board of Trustees and other Salvation Army Boards and Councils, he has been elected Vice-President for Ontario and Quebec of the Canadian Bible Society. In 1996 he was elected to the Board of Trustees for Asbury College.
Colonel Elsie Busby was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Salvation Army parents, Brigadier and Mrs. James Henderson. Colonel Elsie Busby graduated from New Jersey College of Commerce and attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, before entering The Salvation Army School for Officers' Training with her husband.
In addition to serving with her husband as a corps officer, Mrs. Busby has held appointments as Divisional Corps Cadet Counselor, Divisional League of Mercy Secretary and Divisional Home League Secretary.
In 1984 Colonel Elsie Busby became the Territorial Corps Cadet Counselor in the U.S.A. Southern Territory. In 1986 she was appointed as the Divisional Director of Women's Organizations in the Oklahoma/Arkansas Division. Mrs. Busby served in the same capacity in the Florida Division from 1989 until their transfer to the Canada and Bermuda Territory in December 1993 at which time she was appointed Assistant to the Territorial President of Women's Organizations with responsibility for Volunteers and Auxiliaries. She is currently the Territorial Secretary for Women's Organizations with additional responsibility as Territorial Retired Officers' Secretary.
