The Three Pillars of Training

Mission and Ministry Formation

One of the three pillars upon which the training program is developed, mission and ministry formation addresses the practical experience and develops the skills necessary for effective work as Salvation Army officers. Every effort will be made to ensure cadets have a sound framework of understanding that will prepare them for future ministry development and that lieutenants are supported in their appointments.

Spiritual Formation

The foundational pillar upon which the training program is developed, spiritual formation understands that there is a "primacy of discipleship - expressed in spiritual growth, character formation and Salvationist identification - over a predominantly 'academic' approach to the training of officers" (Orders and Regulations for the Training and Development of Salvation Army Officers, 1).

This holistic approach perceives our missional and theological learning as flowing out of a personal relationship with Jesus. As a program, the spiritual formation pillar provides cadets and staff the opportunity, through the community and individually, to connect with Jesus through various scripturally based prayer practices. The program is structured around Jesus' invitation to "abide in me as I abide in you" (John 15:4 NRSV). The program aims to disciple cadets to become disciple-makers.

Theological Formation

One of the three pillars of wholistic training upon which the training program is developed. From the Orders and Regulations for the Training and Development of Salvation Army Officers, we understand knowing as:

This set of competencies {…} particularly concerned with scriptural, theological and missional frameworks. This set of competencies would refer to the “head” since it engages the cognitive domain through conceptual understanding. At the time of entry to college, candidates should demonstrate competencies in the following areas:

  1. Broad familiarity with Scripture and its personal application;
  2. Basic understanding of Salvation Army doctrine and distinctive practices;
  3. Awareness of how faith relates to local context.
