An outpouring of generosity from the community in Hamilton, Bermuda, has helped The Salvation Army’s North Street Citadel family services keep its doors open, despite facing critical financial challenges heading into the Christmas holidays. In October, The Salvation Army urgently appealed to the public for support after the growing demand for services strained their monthly budget, and they faced temporary closures as a result.

As the cost of living has increased in Bermuda, so has the number of people turning to The Salvation Army for assistance. North Street Citadel family services provides essential support for vulnerable populations, including food assistance to those struggling to make ends meet. Last year, approximately 50,000 visits were made to The Salvation Army, including 8,085 visits for food, clothing and Christmas hampers, and 20,650 meals were served.

“Feeding communities is an essential part of our work in reducing long-term poverty and its effects on individuals and families,” says Major Cathy Simms, area commander, Atlantic Division. “The Salvation Army relies on the support of volunteers, stakeholders, individuals, community groups and corporations in order to continue to feed and support Bermudians.”

Despite the increase in demand, food and monetary donations have not kept pace. North Street Citadel family services faced the decision to temporarily close its doors for a week unless enough donations came in to sustain operations through November.

After issuing a press release asking the community for support, The Salvation Army received an overwhelming response in the form of non-perishable food items, such as canned or boxed goods, as well as financial contributions to cover operational costs. Within days, individuals, local businesses and media outlets rallied to support the cause and donations of food and financial support poured in.

“We cannot thank our community enough for coming together in such a meaningful way,” says Captain Dennis Maybury, Bermuda regional public relations officer, Atlantic Division. “This outpouring of support not only highlights the strength of our community but also reinforces the spirit of unity and compassion that defines us.”

“This generous response has been encouraging for the volunteers and team at The Salvation Army in Bermuda,” says Major Simms. “When supporters stand alongside the Army, they give hope and communicate a reminder that our neighbours see the need and want to make a difference.”
