In every successful organization, leadership, teamwork and the celebration of milestones play pivotal roles. These elements are intertwined, creating a cohesive environment that fosters growth, innovation and a sense of community. Understanding the value of each can significantly enhance both individual and collective performance.

The Territorial Ministry Tour in June-July 2024, spearheaded by Commissioners Lee and Debbie Graves, territorial commander and territorial president of women’s ministries, holds profound value and significance for the Canada and Bermuda Territory. This tour was a testament to our leadership’s commitment to recognizing and appreciating the tireless efforts of officers, employees and volunteers. By visiting various locations, the territorial leadership team demonstrated a deep, tangible support for those on the front lines of ministry work.

Commissioners Graves were supported on the tour by Colonels John and Lani Chamness, chief secretary and territorial secretary for spiritual life development, Cabinet secretaries, and retired international leaders General Linda Bond, General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle.

One of the key values of this tour rested in its reinforcement of community and morale. In-person visits provided a unique opportunity for direct interaction, allowing for meaningful conversations and genuine expressions of gratitude. Such encounters are crucial in fostering a sense of belonging and motivation among front-line ministry team members, who often face challenging and demanding work.

The tour also served as an essential platform for leadership to offer encouragement and practical support. By acknowledging the specific needs and achievements of each community, Commissioners Graves and their team were able to tailor their encouragement and advice, thus empowering local ministries to continue their meaningful work with renewed vigour and inspiration.

The Territorial Ministry Tour not only highlighted our leadership’s commitment and dedication to those on the front line, but also strengthened the bonds within the organization, ensuring that every individual felt valued, supported and motivated to carry on their vital mission.

The Essence of Leadership

Leadership is the cornerstone of any thriving organization. Effective leaders inspire and motivate their teams, guiding them toward a shared vision. They are not just authority figures but mentors who cultivate a positive and productive work culture. Good leaders communicate clearly, set achievable goals and provide the necessary support for their teams to succeed. They possess the ability to make tough decisions, often balancing short-term needs with long-term objectives.

Another example of one such leader is Lt-Colonel Mel Bond, who recently retired following 62 years of dedicated leadership and ministry in public relations and development work in the Canada and Bermuda Territory, the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory and at International Headquarters in London, England. His extensive tenure is a remarkable testament to the profound impact he has made by fostering stronger relationships and enhancing the visibility and credibility of The Salvation Army through many initiatives. His efforts in building bridges between the Army and the public, the media and government stakeholders have been instrumental in garnering support, raising awareness and securing crucial resources.

Lt-Colonel Bond’s decades-long dedication exemplifies a legacy of resilience, adaptability and passion for ministry. By navigating the ever evolving landscape of public relations with grace and effectiveness, he not only advanced the Army’s mission but also inspired countless individuals in the field of ministry and beyond. On a personal note, I am grateful for the friendship, mentoring and encouragement he has given to me over the past 25 years. His extraordinary length of service, which is unlikely to ever be matched, remains a beacon of excellence and an inspiring benchmark for future generations of leaders.

Integrating Leadership, Teamwork and Recognition

The integration of effective leadership, teamwork and recognition of achievements creates a dynamic and thriving ministry environment. Christian leaders who foster collaboration and recognize the contributions of their teams build a foundation of trust and mutual respect. This holistic approach ensures that all members feel valued and empowered to contribute their best as they respond to the needs of their congregation and community with inspired commitment.

Our territorial mission statement says: “We are an innovative partner, mobilized to share hope wherever there is hardship, building communities that are just and know the love of Jesus.” We are truly partners in the gospel (see Philippians 1:5) as we become the hands and feet of Christ and live out the mission and values of The Salvation Army in the communities where we serve.

The Territorial Ministry Tour’s motto was “We’re Stronger Together,” based on Ephesians 4:1-16, and I believe that we are stronger because of the intentionality of the visits and conversations experienced during the summer. May our collective leadership continue to support the front lines of ministry as we were inspired and encouraged by these days invested across the territory.
