Labour Trafficking and Labour Exploitation - Canada and Globally

Labour Trafficking and Labour Exploitation - Canada and Globally - January 17, 2023

Key Points:

    1. As the issue of forced labour/modern slavery continues to increase, consistent, standardized awareness raising among supply chain companies is needed to help increase their understanding of the role that supply chains play in contributing to this form of exploitation.

    2. Several significant changes have occurred over the past decade that have expanded the private sector’s requirements to address labour trafficking, including increased transparency legislation, lawsuits against major brands, increased media coverage of this topic, and its emerging relationship with environmental, social, and (corporate) governance (ESG) reporting.

    3. A full range of tools are now available to increase awareness, to identify forced labour scenarios at all levels of supply chains, and to respond to these issues when they arise.

    4. Labour Trafficking in Canada almost exclusively involves migrant workers and is most prevalent in the agricultural sector (farming and aquaculture), the hospitality industry, and domestic work.

    5. Even if workers enter Canada completely legally (i.e. are NOT trafficked) they may be vulnerable to the same types of exploitation by their employers as those who have been trafficked.

    6. Fighting this type of trafficking requires that relationships be built with victims so that they feel comfortable and safe to talk about their situation. This requires patience and often creativity, as this is a difficult population to reach.

Be the Hero: Be the Change - Book Cover

Be the Hero: Be the Change by Matt Friedman

Small acts multiplied by millions of people can help change our world. Matthew Friedman, the founder of the Be the Hero Campaign, is a humanitarian professional who was formerly employed by the United Nations and the US government, and has lived and worked in more than 40 countries. He has come to realize that if those who work on the world’s problems could solve them, they would. But the fundamental truth is that they simply can’t because the task is well beyond what a few thousand people can fix. Crises like climate change, poverty, modern slavery, and refugees require an army of united people – people who care enough to be the change. Friedman believes that collective actions of ordinary people have the greatest chance of effecting a real transformation. He considers everyone who volunteers, no matter how big or small the gesture, to be heroic. Heroism exists, often untapped, within each of us. It is a voice of good, of righteousness, of action, and of love. In today’s world, this voice too often lies dormant and receives very little nurturing. Friedman urges this heroic part of us to rise up in the form of love, expressing itself publicly through good deeds. Friedman’s clarion call is this: identify a cause that you are passionate about, accept responsibility for it, surrender, and then step up to get involved. By motivating and training you to serve, he offers a new sense of purpose and meaning for your life. This book will equip you to better understand the importance of these global issues and our collective roles. It’s a step-by-step guide to becoming an everyday hero. Where Were You? A Profile of Modern Slavery - Book Cover

Where Were You? A Profile of Modern Slavery  by Matt Friedman

"My boots-on-the-ground work to fight human trafficking throughout Asia. There are more slaves in the world today than any other time in history. Enter the world of human trafficking and explore what we can do together to end this global crime. Where Were You?: A Profile of Modern Slavery by Matthew Friedman provides an up-to-date overview of human trafficking, a largely ignored present-day evil, and recounts true stories of enslavement in Asia today. Former United Nations and USAID expert Matthew Friedman obtained in-depth first-hand knowledge with boots-on-the-ground work over 30 years throughout Asia. Human trafficking exists in nearly every nation on earth and Friedman has personally interviewed hundreds of freed slaves and imprisoned traffickers throughout South and Southeast Asia. The modern slave trade operates in brothels, fisheries, clothing and chocolate industries, as well as a myriad of other manufacturing jobs and is a billion dollar business that continues to grow unchecked. Even with the collective response of governments, the UN and civil society partners, less than 0.2 percent of the victims are assisted. ""We''re not winning the fight against human slavery. Relying solely on the anti-slavery community around the world to tackle the scourge of modern slavery and the criminals behind it simply is not working. Unless something drastic changes, this trend will continue unabated,"" writes Friedman. This book not only reveals the plight of human trafficking victims, Friedman also offers valuable advice and guidance related to his own personal experiences working in the counter-trafficking and development world. He offers valuable lessons for those thinking about entering this field."
