The Turning Point
When I arrived at The Salvation Army, I was overwhelmed, alone, and scared, struggling with severe depression. At 50, life took a significant downturn—I lost everything I held dear. Despite past trials, including escaping abuse as a teenager and overcoming hardships through education and work, I was rebuilding my life once again as a single parent. An abusive marriage had left me in debt due to my ex-husband's gambling. Then, disability and systemic failures compounded by COVID-19 disruptions led me to homelessness.
The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope played a crucial role in easing my isolation when other systems had failed me. Through Pathway of Hope, I took important steps and gradually regained a sense of worth and dignity. This support renewed my sense of purpose and faith, unlike other initiatives that often left me feeling ignored. The staff consistently showed genuine care, helping me navigate out of poverty and despair.
Building a New Foundation
My initial focus with Pathway of Hope was on addressing basic food and housing security needs: ensuring access to food, nutrients, and winter clothing while navigating processes to access rights such as insurance, legal support, and potential housing assistance. With their help, I became more aware of local resources and received spiritual and emotional support, including research into available options.
Over a year, significant progress was made. I received better health support, gained a dedicated case manager who coordinated with Pathway of Hope staff and began receiving rental and disability financial assistance. Securing a safe and sanitary housing rental was a significant milestone. While I continue to address outstanding tasks like filing taxes for years of homelessness and medical challenges, I also qualified for retroactive and ongoing Disability Tax benefits. Additionally, I initiated applying for my Teacher's Pension medically, ensuring ongoing future security and improving my quality of life.
These developments have not only provided stability but have also inspired me to "pay it forward" by advocating for others facing similar challenges. My goal is to achieve enough health stability to support others, giving me a sense of purpose derived from my own experiences and a hopeful outlook for the future.
A New Chapter and Future Aspirations
Pathway of Hope was crucial in turning my life around through regular support and check-ins, which were instrumental during overwhelming times. The staff's engagement in my spiritual needs helped me rediscover hope and set goals beyond survival. Their advocacy ensured clarity and support during times of confusion, empowering my journey.
Reflecting on my journey, I highly recommend Pathway of Hope to others. Even small steps during check-ins can lead to significant progress. The initiative provides consistent, respectful support, acknowledging spiritual and cultural differences with integrity. I am amazed at my improved circumstances since first seeking help. Despite initial hesitations, my consistent commitment to the program was a lifeline. Thanks to the unwavering support and compassion of the staff, I transitioned from homelessness to having a stable income and a home in just over a year. This journey has not only restored my sense of self but also inspired me to set meaningful goals to help others facing similar challenges.
