5 Styles of Parenting
There are four widely researched styles of parenting: authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and neglectful. The styles range from controlling to undemanding; and from cold and unresponsive to loving and receptive. In recent years, over-involved parents, who are present in every aspect of their child's life, are often referred to as the fifth style. They are also known as snowplow or helicopter parents. Attachment Theory: How Childhood Affects Life
The attachment theory argues that a strong emotional and physical bond to one primary caregiver in our first years of life is critical to our development. If our bond is strong and we are securely attached, then we feel safe to explore the world. If our bond is weak, we feel insecurely attached and as a result are afraid to leave or explore a rather scary-looking world.
