Organ Trafficking

Key Points

  1. Organ Trafficking is an umbrella term used to describe a range of illicit activities regarding organ transplants. This includes removing organs ILLEGALLY or selling or transplanting those organs through the black or red market.

  2. Many people consent to the removal of their organ BUT there may be deception as to the amount of payment for the organ or there will be no payment at all.

  3. Organ Trafficking / Trafficking of Person for Organs / Organ Tourism depends on four populations:
    • Desperate patients willing to travel great distances and face considerable insecurity to obtain transplants they need.
    • Equally desperate and mobile organ sellers
    • Medical Staff / Surgeons willing to break the law or ignore regulations and longstanding medical norms
    • Organ brokers and other intermediaries with established connections to the key players in the criminal world
