Key Points:
- As the issue of forced labour/modern slavery continues to increase, consistent, standardized awareness raising among supply chain companies is needed to help increase their understanding of the role that supply chains play in contributing to this form of exploitation.
- Several significant changes have occurred over the past decade that have expanded the private sector’s requirements to address labour trafficking, including increased transparency legislation, lawsuits against major brands, increased media coverage of this topic, and its emerging relationship with environmental, social, and (corporate) governance (ESG) reporting.
- A full range of tools are now available to increase awareness, to identify forced labour scenarios at all levels of supply chains, and to respond to these issues when they arise.
- Labour Trafficking in Canada almost exclusively involves migrant workers and is most prevalent in the agricultural sector (farming and aquaculture), the hospitality industry, and domestic work.
- Even if workers enter Canada completely legally (i.e. are NOT trafficked) they may be vulnerable to the same types of exploitation by their employers as those who have been trafficked.
- Fighting this type of trafficking requires that relationships be built with victims so that they feel comfortable and safe to talk about their situation. This requires patience and often creativity, as this is a difficult population to reach.
