The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Director for Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Aubrey Vincent, reports that “The Salvation Army is ready to help for any after effects of the hurricane.”
The Salvation Army is providing food and water to more than 100 people in Clarenville, Newfoundland after Hurricane Igor swept into the southern and eastern parts of the island earlier today. As well, Mobile Community Response Vehicles and their teams are on stand-by, and Salvation Army emergency shelters and personnel across the island are ready to respond as needed. The community of Clarenville declared a state of emergency because of flooding. Over 100 mm of rain has fallen, causing some road wash-outs, and there is no drinking water in the community so bottled water has become a necessity. The Salvation Army church in Gambo, Newfoundland, is preparing food for people who have been evacuated from their homes due to flooding.
