We are excited to share with you three staffing and personnel updates in our department.

Effective January 1, 2024, Captain Shawna Goulding was appointed as the Territorial Youth Secretary. And to support the new structures implemented in our divisions, Sheryl Slous has transitioned to the new role of Territorial Children’s Ministries Secretary. Starting February 12, 2024, Major Everett Barrow will be the new Corps Health Director supporting our corps towards building a healthy and sustainable mission.

Here’s a short intro from each of the new team:

Major Everett Barrow

Corps Health Director

Major Everett BarrowI was ordained and commissioned as a Salvation Army in 1978 as a member of the Disciples of Jesus session. Vi and I were married in 1984 and we have one son, Josh. We have served in a variety of appointments, including corps, CFOT, DHQ and THQ appointments. We retired in July 2020 after 42 years of active service. This will be my 6th post-retirement appointment of which 4 were corps. Before I conclude this brief intro, I should note that I am an avid Toronto Maple Leaf fan and Vi is an avid Boston Bruins fan. As I was typing this, Boston just lost and I’m hiding!!

I recognize that we are living in challenging times as it relates to congregational life. Yet, the opportunities have never been greater. God continues to position the Salvation Army for greater impact and to serve with relevance. At the heart of these opportunities, we find corps who are praying deeply, listening intently, following the lead of the Spirit, ensuring the Gospel is lived out, and aligning with the spiritual and practical needs of the communities in which they serve. We need to continue to encourage and celebrate that God is still working amongst us.

The Corps Mission department, along with corps officers and consultants across the territory, have invested a lot of time and energy in creating opportunities and tools to help foster healthy corps. I look forward to joining the team, learning as I go and hopefully bringing experience that is relevant. The opportunities to engage with Divisional Leaders, Area Commanders and Corps Officers will be invaluable and welcomed as we witness together what God can do if we work together, with the deep desire to see His church(corps) flourish for Kingdom building.

Captain Shawna Goulding

Territorial Youth Secretary

Captain Shawna GouldingShawna entered the College for Officer Training (CFOT) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, along with her session mates (Disciples of the Cross) in 2012. Since being commissioned as a Salvation Army Officer in 2014 she has held appointments as Corps Officer of Prince Albert Community Church (Saskatchewan), Westville Corps (Nova Scotia), West End Community Church (Somerset, Bermuda), and Weston Community Church (Winnipeg, Manitoba); as Divisional Youth Secretary and Divisional Candidates Secretary for Bermuda; as Training Officer, Mission & Ministry Formation Coordinator, and Personnel Coordinator at the College for Officer Training. Her appointment as Territorial Youth Secretary for the Canada and Bermuda territory commenced on January 1, 2024.

Shawna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Rocky Mountain College. When she’s not immersed in the duties of the ministry, you’ll find Shawna hanging out with her dog, Vince, capturing some of God’s masterpieces through a camera lens and exploring the world in travels.

Shawna’s desire has been to journey alongside others and partner in building God’s Kingdom here on earth. She looks forward to continuing this focus, working together with the CAN BDA Youth Team, divisional youth teams, and ministry units across our territory. Shawna strives to ‘focus on the goal’ and, as such, has chosen Philippians 3:12-14 as her life verse(s).

Sheryl Slous

Territorial Children's Ministries Secretary

Sheryl SlousSheryl has been in full-time ministry to children, youth and families in The Salvation Army for 25 years. She spent several years as a children’s pastor in local corps, followed by various roles on divisional and territorial children and youth teams in both the Canada and Bermuda and USA Eastern territories. Most recently she has served as the Creative Director for Strategy, Ministry and Resource as part of the CAN BDA Youth team where she has been a creative catalyst, helping leaders think outside the box using innovative brainstorming tools, and then helping them turn their great ideas into actual strategies, resources and events for ministry.

Sheryl holds a Master of Arts in Children’s and Family Ministry and is in constant pursuit of new and innovative ways to translate the complex truths of the gospel in simple and relevant ways that can be understood and lived out by children as they follow Jesus. She is passionate about discipleship, an advocate for partnering with and supporting parents - helping them integrate life and faith at home, and genuinely believes that kids can use their gifts to serve, lead and have a voice in the church and in their communities today.

Sheryl envisions a Salvation Army where ministry to children and their families is amplified, prioritized, strengthened and thriving in every ministry unit across our territory, and is committed to working together to help make this a reality.
