As the warmth of summer emerges, churches across our territory are preparing for innovative ways to engage their congregations and extend their outreach. St. Thomas Community Church & Community Ministries, serving St. Thomas, ON, offers us an inspiring and exciting example of how summer can be transformed into a season of growth and connection. The corps’ diverse array of activities planned for this summer offers valuable insights for churches everywhere looking to make the most of this opportune season. Continue reading below to get a snapshot of the exciting endeavours planned at St. Thomas Church & Community Ministries.
Empowering Summer Students
At St. Thomas, summer isn't merely a break from routine; it's an opportunity for empowerment and growth, especially for the youth. With new summer students onboard, St. Thomas is looking to take advantage of their local park and beach access for Park & Beach Ministries. The students will help develop 8 Weeks of Daily Adventures, a series of social media activities and devotions to share with families. In addition to their weekly faith-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program, St. Thomas will be offering two day camps this summer called, “Start the Party” (available through ThinkOrange) and “Scuba” (available through Group Publishing). To top it all off, the summer students will look to offer their “Big Feelings” program using the “Big Feelings, Bigger God” book by Michele Howe.
Inclusive Summer Programs
St. Thomas's commitment to inclusivity shines brightly through its partnership with their summer placement student from Fanshawe College. This student will work closely with their summer students to develop Leadership Development Training for volunteers and leaders-in-training, new parent resources, and new curriculum and program materials for their sensory room in support of St. Thomas’ special needs ministry.
Expansive Outreach Initiatives
Summer provides the perfect backdrop for outreach, and St. Thomas embraces this opportunity wholeheartedly. Weekly Family BBQs, Park/Beach Ministries with refreshing treats, and Movie Nights under the stars create inviting spaces for fellowship and connection. Through these initiatives, St. Thomas extends its hand of friendship to the wider community, welcoming all to experience the warmth and hospitality of the church family.
Deepening Discipleship
Discipleship lies at the core of St. Thomas's summer offerings. And since they’re already outdoors, why not take advantage of their surroundings? Hence, they are currently mapping out plans to run Alpha at the Beach. And their Women’s Book Club will be held at the church. The sermon series, "Made For Mission" and "Hit it out of the Park" focus on aiming to live for Christ in all facets of life.
In conclusion, while St. Thomas Church and Communities Ministries’ summer activities may be unique to its context, the principles and values they embody are universal. By prioritizing empowerment, outreach, and discipleship, churches everywhere can unlock the transformative potential of summer, fostering vibrant communities grounded in faith, love, and service. While rest is critical and an important aspect of summer, our church doors do not necessarily need to close either. Let’s help others encounter Jesus through all seasons of the year! If you have any questions about the resources St. Thomas is developing, please reach out to their corps officers Captains Jon & Tracy Savage.
