The NBA season may have been put on hold because of COVID-19, but that didn’t stop the one-and-only Toronto Raptors Superfan Nav Bhatia from showing up.
On May 6, he left staff speechless at The Salvation Army’s Mississauga Temple Community Church when he delivered 100 ready-made meals with a food truck from his charity self-titled the Superfan Nav Bhatia Foundation.
Joel Binner, director of community and family services at Mississauga Temple, said the whole process of how they scored a visit from Superfan was comical. A contact at the Peel Regional Police called one morning and asked if they would be ready by noon to accept 100 meals. Ann Pugh, who also works at the church, ran into Binner’s office and emphatically said, “We need some families to come in at noon!”
Later that morning, the Super Fan truck rolled up to a parking lot full of families patiently waiting in their cars to catch a glimpse of Mississauga’s local celebrity.
Bhatia didn’t just bring meals that day, he shared joy with the local community by taking some pictures and signing a few autographs—while keeping physical distancing guidelines.
“It was quite the thing to see the faces of our clients light up,” Binner reminisces. The impromptu event turned out to be a slam dunk.
