  • The law as it pertains to forced and child marriages in Canada;
  • How to intervene safely and effectively in cases involving forced and child marriages;
  • Actions that people and organizations can take to help end forced and child marriages.

Shirley Gillett

Shirley Gillett has been working on the issue of forced marriage since 2008. Working with The I Do! Project, she assists with the repatriation of women and girls who have been taken abroad for the purpose of a forced marriage, and helps those facing or fleeing a forced marriage in Canada. She provides training on forced marriage for service providers, government personnel and community members, and is the Coordinator of The Survivors’ Group which brings together survivors of forced marriage and FGM for community outreach and mutual support. She also created the Survivors’ Initiative, a program which trains survivors of forced marriage to share their stories in a manner that is safe and empowering for themselves and instructive for others. She has received the Spirit of Resilience Award from Reclaim Your Voice and the 2019 Distinguished Women’s Award from Uzima Women Relief Group International for her work on forced marriage.
