Harvard ManageMentor®
The Salvation Army has partnered with Harvard Business Publishing to offer the Harvard ManageMentor® program, an internationally recognized program designed to prepare leaders for real-world challenges. The program is built around interactive and collaborative exercises completed in a flexible, self-directed learning environment.
This transformative program offers two levels of certification: Foundational and Advanced.
Advanced Leadership Certification (ALC)
The Advanced Leadership Certification (ALC) is designed for graduates of the Foundational Leadership Certification (FLC) who are ready to take their leadership to the next level. This self-directed, online program deepens participants' understanding of strategic leadership, change management, and decision-making—critical skills for leading with impact within The Salvation Army.
Eligibility
To participate in ALC, applicants must:
- Complete the Foundational Leadership Certification (FLC).
- Have at least two years of full-time experience with TSA.
- Receive their supervisor’s approval.
Program Structure
Participants must complete:
- 10 Core Courses in Harvard ManageMentor®.
- 2 Elective Courses in Harvard ManageMentor®.
- 2 Facilitation Courses
- 3 Leadership Cafés.
- 1 On-the-Job Action Plan.
The program is designed for flexibility, allowing participants to complete it at their own pace within three years.
Core Courses
- Change Management – Learn to navigate and lead through change with confidence.
- Decision Making – Strengthen your ability to make strategic, data-informed decisions.
- Strategic Thinking – Develop a future-focused mindset for long-term success.
- Developing Employees – Help your team grow through meaningful development strategies.
- Strategy Planning & Execution – Understand how to create and implement an effective strategy.
- Stress Management – Learn to manage stress for improved well-being and productivity.
- Team Management – Maximize team performance and collaboration.
- Attracting & Cultivating Talent – Hire, develop, and retain top talent.
- Crisis Management – Lead with clarity and compassion during crises.
- Delegating – Empower your team by delegating effectively.
Elective Courses
Elective courses allow participants to customize their learning experience based on their leadership focus. Participants will complete two additional Harvard ManageMentor Courses as well as their Core Course.
Leadership Cafés
Leadership Cafés provide interactive learning experiences, where participants:
- Engage in peer discussions with Salvation Army leaders from across the territory.
- Apply real-world leadership principles to The Army’s mission-driven work.
- Explore how leadership skills translate to impactful service delivery.
- ALC participants can also take on facilitation roles, leading cafés for both Foundational and Advanced levels—an opportunity to develop public speaking, coaching and facilitation skills.
Certification and Digital Badge
Harvard ManageMentor® awards a certificate for each completed course. Upon completing the program, participants will receive an official certification from The Salvation Army in the form of a shareable, verifiable digital badge through Credly.
Program Duration and Flexibility
- Self-paced – Can be completed in a few months or up to three years.
- Participants set their own timelines and manage their own progress.
Program Cost
This program is fully funded by Leadership Development as part of The Salvation Army’s investment in growing strong leaders across the territory. There is no cost to you or your ministry unit.
