Leadership Development Orientation
Explore Your Leadership Journey in The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda.

Discover how The Salvation Army invests in the growth of its people through this mini-course. Whether you're just beginning your leadership journey or looking to take the next step, this course will introduce you to the programs, tools and support available to help you grow. This course is required for new leaders in The Salvation Army, and is a prerequisite for all Leadership Development programs.
Eligibility:
This course is open to all people leaders in The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda who have their supervisor’s approval to participate. This includes officers, employees and volunteers. Volunteers applying for this program will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

You Will Learn About:
Leadership Formation Programs
Leaders arrive with diverse experiences—but everyone begins their journey with Leadership Development here through these self-directed programs, which are foundational to growth in The Salvation Army.
- LEADS Basics Leadership Certification – Discover the fundamentals of effective leadership through LEADS, The Salvation Army’s Leadership Capability Framework.
- Foundational Leadership Certification (FLC) – Strengthen your core leadership capabilities with Harvard ManageMentor® courses and practical, mission-based learning.
- Advanced Leadership Certification (ALC) – Level up your strategic leadership skills through targeted, practical - and explore opportunities to facilitate leadership development sessions online.
Applied Leadership Programs
Leaders who have completed FLC - and those who have gone on to complete ALC - are eligible to apply for an Applied Leadership Program. These programs include in-person sessions, peer collaboration and mission-focused learning.
- Emerging Leaders Leadership Certification – An 18-month, cohort-based leadership experience featuring coaching, 360º feedback, applied learning projects and in-person gatherings.
- LEADS Applied Leadership Certification – Apply the LEADS framework to mission-driven work through interactive, in-person workshops offered across the territory
Executive Management Leadership Programs
Leaders who complete both Applied programs may be eligible for Executive Management programs, including the Leader Internship and Non-profit Executive Management Certificate. These are specialized opportunities to grow your strategic and organizational leadership alongside senior leaders and sector experts.
- Leader Internship Leadership Certification– A immersive leadership experience combining Leadership Development course content with hands-on engagement alongside senior leaders.
- Non-Profit Executive Management Leadership Certification – A five-course credential offered in partnership with Trinity Western University - designed to equip nonprofit leaders for strategic excellence.
Program Costs
This program is fully funded by Leadership Development as part of The Salvation Army’s investment in growing strong leaders across the territory. There is no cost to you or your ministry unit.
