In November and December, The Salvation Army’s Hope in the City events unfolded across the Canada and Bermuda Territory, setting the stage for the Christmas season and celebrating the launch of the annual kettle campaign. “It was uplifting and affirming to meet with officers, employees, Salvationists and friends across the territory,” says Commissioner Lee Graves.

The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is symbolic of the gold, frankincense and myrrh the Wise Men gave to Jesus, as well as a reminder that Jesus was God’s gift to us. Each Christmas, The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda shares this gift of hope in communities across the territory.

“I went from having a full-time career to facing life as a single mom,” says Erin Menzies. Fortunately, the Army was there.

This year's annual Christmas With The Salvation Army dazzled attendees with its blend of music, fellowship and festive joy as Salvationists, officers and mission partners gathered at Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto. Last Christmas, Major Shirley King witnessed an act of selflessness -- a God moment -- at her church, a sacred space where God came and used His people. It occurred between two people, "one declaring need. The other responding to the need."

Sarah Byford is known for her many fundraisers in the community. She has collected 250 stuffed bears for kids at the Children’s Hospital Foundation in Victoria; made gift baskets and cards and designed golf towels and T-shirts to raise money; sold candy and hot chocolate, using the proceeds for the Ronald McDonald House; spent her birthday money for people in need; and organized raffles and bottle drives for charity.

“I want to help children and make them smile.”
