At St. John’s Temple, N.L., music is more than just notes and rhythms; it’s a heartbeat that pulses through the community, bringing families together in joyous harmony.
Every Thursday evening, families come together for Thursday Night Church, a program where children, from 5 to 17, participate in a variety of music ministries and share a meal together. Week after week, children and their families gather not just to make music, but to make memories, form lasting bonds and grow in their love for God and each other.
“Thursday Night Church has become a place where families can reconnect and grow together,” says Joshua Holloway, children and youth ministry director. “Whether it’s through singing, playing in the band or leading worship, the music at St. John’s Temple is about more than just performance—it’s about building a community rooted in faith.”
A Night of Togetherness
Richard and Jennifer Donnan, who joined St. John’s Temple in 2018, have been attending Thursday Night Church with their children, Rebecca and Isaac, for a few years. Rebecca and Isaac eagerly participate in the singing company, junior and youth band, and worship team. For the Donnans, Thursday nights are about more than just music—they’re about the community and personal growth it fosters.
“Connecting with friends and learning more about our faith has been so meaningful,” shares Jennifer Donnan. “The music programs have given our kids the chance to grow, both spiritually and musically.”
She also emphasizes how the supportive environment builds confidence in her children, through the mentorship of leaders and the encouragement of their peers. The opportunity for their children to be valued and to develop leadership skills is one of the main reasons they appreciate Thursday Night Church.
Jana Thorne, a mom of two, who attends each week, says that Thursday Night Church is an evening designed to fit seamlessly into the lives of busy families. “When I was growing up, we had church activities on almost every night of the week. Having all the youth activities on one night, with supper included, really makes it possible for us,” says Thorne.
"It’s not just about the convenience—it’s the fellowship time, too, connecting with other families over a meal.”
Connecting Through Music
As the evening unfolds, the sound of music fills every corner of St. John’s Temple. From the youngest voices in the singing company to the bold brass notes of the band, each melody is a testament to the relationships being built within these walls. For many, these programs have become a tradition—one that spans generations and strengthens the bonds between families.
Richard Donnan, inspired by his children’s enthusiasm, recently joined the youth band alongside his daughter, taking on the challenge of learning a new instrument. “It’s been amazing to learn with them and be part of their musical journey,” he says. The opportunity to grow together as a family has enriched their experience at St. John’s Temple.
Through these musical experiences, children not only grow in their abilities but also forge deep connections with their peers, families and faith. As they sing and play, their bonds grow stronger, creating an atmosphere of unity and belonging. Music becomes a common language, bridging gaps and building lifelong friendships.
Through these moments of harmony, the children not only find their voices but also discover a sense of purpose and belonging that extends far beyond the Thursday night gatherings.
A Legacy of Praise
In every note sung, every instrument played, and every laugh shared, Thursday Night Church has become a powerful expression of togetherness. Volunteers and leaders play a crucial role in shaping this experience, offering guidance, encouragement and love to the children and families who attend. Their dedication helps to bind families, friends and the congregation in ways that go far beyond the music. It’s the support of these leaders that fosters confidence, nurtures talent and creates a space where everyone feels valued.
“It doesn’t matter how much they practise; the volunteer leaders are so supportive,” shares Jennifer Donnan. This kind of mentorship helps children develop both musically and personally, knowing they are respected and encouraged to grow.
As families leave the church each Thursday evening, the sense of community they carry with them is palpable.
“Leaving Thursday Night Church, I always feel a sense of joy and connection. It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together, united by faith and music,” says Valerie Barter, a mom and long-time volunteer.
Participants know they are part of something much greater than themselves: a loving, faith-filled church family, thriving in perfect harmony.
