Every year, many people participate in something called “Dry January,” a recent trend where people give up drinking for the month. Of course, not drinking is nothing new for The Salvation Army—we've long held a sober stance on alcohol. So, with 160 years of history and experience, how might the Army speak into this conversation today?

Two Salvationists offer their perspective on alcohol and society. Dr. Adrian Bonner, a health researcher and consultant for the Army in the U.K., gets into the trends and data, showing why William Booth was concerned about alcohol's impacts since the beginning. And Dr. James Read, founding director of the Army's Ethics Centre in Winnipeg, gives a first-hand look at how the Army's positional statement on alcohol was created—and why it's a call to action for us today.
