Musicians ranging in age from eight to 80 delighted the audience at a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Edmonton Temple Band. Special guests Majors Norman and Lois Garcia made unique contributions to the program with instrumental and vocal solos and duets. The evening featured bands of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Nearly 30 former band members, many traveling from other cities for the occasion, formed yesterday's band and gave a crisp rendition of the classic march Southdown, led by retired Bandmaster Charles Davidson.
Tomorrow's musicians included young children in their first public performance on a brass instrument and the Temple Youth Band (leader Shawn Way), which demonstrated a high degree of competence and musicality in their offering of Stand Up and Shout It.
Bandmaster Al Peterson conducted today's Edmonton Temple Band in a number of selections including The Lord's Command, evoking nostalgic memories of the Band's performance of the same music at the 1990 Festival of Gospel Music in Toronto under the baton of then bandmaster Bob Petersen.
Celebrations continued on Sunday, when the focus was on the continuing ministry and commitment of the band over the past century. In his message, Major Norman Garcia reminded listeners of the need for continued commitment into the future. After the service, many memories were shared and friends re-united during a special luncheon.
On Tuesday evening the band was back at practice, preparing to continue its ministry of music into the second century.
