boothFor students throughout Manitoba and the world, an advanced degree can lead to greater job security, a higher paycheque, and greater professional freedom within the economically challenged job market.

That's why a recent policy change at the University of Manitoba is welcome news for students like Megan Bartel, a student at faith-based Booth College. In September, Megan will enter her third year in religious studies at Booth College in Winnipeg. Once she completes her Bachelors degree in two years she will be able to apply for study in graduate programs at the University of Manitoba. Bartel says, “This new agreement will open up a vast array of opportunities for me to further pursue my education while remaining close to home in Manitoba.” Bartel, whose goal is to become a Professor of Religious Studies, also adds, “This new policy is a win-win situation, benefiting faith-based students like myself by giving us more local educational opportunities.”

Prior to this agreement, students applying to the province's largest university from a faith-based college were not accepted into graduate programs. The new policy approved by the University of Manitoba's Senate will alter the regulations for admission into the Faculty of Graduate Studies to include four-year undergraduate degrees from “Canadian institutions empowered by law to grant degrees.” This includes Booth College. David Neale, Academic Dean of Booth College says, “This approach will make it easier for faith-based colleges to recruit students, who can begin their post-secondary education at a smaller, more intimate setting, and then pursue graduate work at the University of Manitoba.”

Booth College is a Christian University College sponsored by The Salvation Army that brings together Christian faith, rigorous scholarship and a passion for service. The College educates students to understand the complexities of our world, to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be active contributors to society, and to know how Christian faith compels them to bring hope, social justice and mercy into our world.
