“We have caught the vision splendid of a world which is to be” was the hymn that captured the enthusiasm of Salvationists gathered at territorial headquarters, March 3, to welcome and install the new Chief Secretary, Colonel Floyd Tidd, and Territorial Secretary for Women's Ministries, Colonel Tracey Tidd.
Commissioner William Francis, Territorial Commander, emphasized the importance of smooth transitions in leadership, noting, “A relay race is won or lost in the passing of the baton.” He praised the Tidds' skill and devotion to their calling, observing that God had chosen them and would equip them for the task.
Bryan Campbell, General Legal Counsel for the Army, welcomed Colonels Tidd, pointing out that “God has consistently provided the Army with great leaders to face great challenges.” He added that the Tidds' willingness to “roll up their sleeves and work alongside others has inspired great respect.”
Colonel Tracey Tidd expressed her appreciation and shared her testimony of growing up in Sudbury, travelling to the Army Sunday school on the community bus. She noted how the Army became an extended family to her and started her on the path to officership. As she assumed her new responsibilities, she claimed the promise of Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that [God] who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
A women's double trio, composed of headquarters staff, reinforced the faithfulness of God with a musical selection, “His Provision.”
During the installation ceremony, Commissioner William Francis called attention to the power of the mercy seat, suggesting that, when it comes to service, “our all is on the altar.” Commissioner Marilyn Francis, Territorial President for Women's Ministries, shared a prayer of dedication for the Tidds and their leadership.
Colonel Floyd Tidd spoke of the privilege of being “partners in the Gospel” (see Philippians 1:3). “We pledge ourselves to serve with you, to be family together,” he said. “We pledge to be ambassadors for Christ and to share his reconciling work at Calvary with the world.” Quoting Commissioner Samuel Logan Brengle, Colonel Tidd noted that our work is meaningless unless we carry it out in a spirit of love.
To the strains of “Shine on Us,” the congregation affirmed in benediction, “Lord, let your love, love with no end, come over us.”
