It was 19 years ago that I found myself marching across the grounds of Toronto's College for Officer Training (CFOT) to be welcomed as a cadet. It was a new endeavor for me, my husband, David, and our young daughter as we nervously “marched in.” Family, friends, training college staff, and divisional and territorial leaders had come to celebrate the beginning of our journey to honour God's call upon our lives to serve as Salvation Army officers.
My role was reversed a few days ago as I stood as one in the crowd gathered for the welcome service of the Heralds of Grace Session. Held at Winnipeg's Southlands Community Church, the occasion celebrated that the call of God upon his children continues. Newly stationed at the CFOT, I smiled with joy remembering those steps taken so may years ago, feeling the eagerness and apprehension of the newest cadets as they were welcomed.
The Heralds of Grace represent our vast country of Canada, from shore to shore, and the cultural diversity of our land which makes it the beautiful nation it is. As the cadets marched in, smiles washed over faces when the children of cadets also saluted, the youngest of them not sure whether to salute the congregation or the territorial commander, Commissioner Brian Peddle.
The joyful celebrations of the day, as family and friends worshipped together, created memories to be cherished, especially by the cadets. All in attendance were challenged to live lives of authentic grace because of the grace Jesus Christ has showered on us. God's presence was sought through prayer, to guide and equip the cadets for their studies and calling, and to be their provision on the journey. People across the territory and around the world joined in those prayers as the celebration was live-streamed online.
A unique luncheon was served following the welcome event, complete with Salvation Army bobble heads and different foods with such creative names as the “international Salarmi” cheese and crackers in honour of William Booth and “aggressive Christianity coffee” in honour of Evangeline Booth.
From start to finish the weekend was a time of welcome as the CFOT welcomed the territorial and divisional leaders and they, in turn, welcomed the territory's newest cadets. The overriding hospitality of Jesus was experienced through the expression of God's people and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Although you may not have been at the welcome service, join me in praying for the new cadets and others God is calling to serve him. May we all live as “heralds of grace” to the glory of God.
