S.O.A.P.

S.O.A.P. journaling is a simple and effective way to record and process what you sense God is saying as you study his Word. It’s also a great tool to use at a later time when you want to reflect on and review some of the “gems” that you have received. Without writing them down, you may forget those blessings and important lessons!

While journaling is a way to spend personal time with the Lord, you may want to share some of your notes with another person or small group. Having a written record becomes very important as you discuss what you have discovered. Through discussion, you may be able to look deeper into what God is saying to you, gain new insight and even encourage others.

How to S.O.A.P.

S—SCRIPTURE
Open your Bible to the Scripture passage chosen for the day. Take time to carefully read the text and allow God to speak to you. When you are finished, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you and write it in your journal.

O—OBSERVATION
What is God is saying to you through this Scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you.

A—APPLICATION
How does this Scripture apply to your life right now? Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, a new promise or a correction for a particular area of your life. Write it in your journal.

P—PRAYER
Ask God to give you greater insight into what he wants to reveal to you through the text. Prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say. Write down what you have learned.
